An Open Apology To All The Girls I’ve Been Mean To

[this is good]

I’m sorry for all of the times that I’ve made fun of traditionally feminine things, like make-up and pretty clothing. I’m sorry that I derided these things as stupid and frivolous – the fact that I did that says more about my own insecurities than it does about anything else.

I’m sorry that I called you a slut. What I meant was that I was jealous that boys wanted to sleep with you. What I meant was that I was jealous of how comfortable you seemed to be in your body, how easily you…

Tips For Writers

love this

The Belle Jar

Write because you have something to say.

Write because you’ve always wanted to.

Write because you only just realized that you might die next week, or tomorrow, or five minutes from now, and you want to leave something behind for posterity.

Write because you have a secret fire burning inside of you and the only way that you can fan the flames is by sharing your thoughts with someone else.

Write because you’re bored and don’t have anything better to do.

Or, at least, if it is a thing, then so is white on white crime, but no one ever talks about that, because it’s easier to believe that black folks are inherently violent so that when communities of color try to have a discussion about racism in the justice system, people who would rather ignore gross injustices can point fingers and yell, “BLACK ON BLACK CRIME” to shut down any discussion about the school-to-prison pipeline or policies in this country that lead to black folks being locked up at higher rates than white folks (or gunned down without recourse, *ahem*.)

me right nowIn defining myself, I want what I share about my life to amount to more than just a bunch of declarative statements on Facebook and Twitter. I want people to see action and witness change.

I can talk to you all day about what I want from life and where I see myself, but it is more important to me that I be a woman of action.

I don’t want to just know the rhetoric; I want to actually put in the work.
